What Has Beer Belly Got To Do With Beer Drinking?

By Chris Chew

You know something? People don’t call your big rounded tummy beer belly for no reason. It is very noticeable that beer drinkers have a tendency to accumulate fat in their tummy area and this is especially more so as they get older.

So is it really true that beer drinking can give you the beer belly? Well, it is not necessarily the beer that causes your tummy to grow in circumference. It is the intake of too many calories that is the real reason. As such, any kind of calories, whether from beer or otherwise can increase your tummy fat.

However alcohol does play a big part regarding your tummy fat because when you drink, your body stops burning fat and burns the alcohol instead to get rid of it because alcohol is a poison.

Beer also gets the blame for belly fat because a mug of beer has approximately 150 calories. So if you are a regular drinker, can you imagine how many extra calories you are consuming every night?

On top of that, alcohol is also known to increase your appetite. So when you are drinking, you will probably be eating more than you normally would. This will certainly make your tummy even bigger!

Men tends to store fat in their tummy area more so than women because women have more subcutaneous fat, so their fat tends to be deposited in their arms, thighs, and butts rather than in their bellies. That is why there are more men with beer bellies.

Beer bellies tend to affect older people more because as we get older, we need fewer calories because we are less active and as such, gaining weight becomes easier.

Besides being an eyesore, having a beer belly can also be very dangerous to your health. This is because beer belly fat is visceral fat and this type of body fat can cause diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart diseases.

Doctors say that waist circumference exceeding 40 inches for men and 35 inches for women carry a much increased risk of heart diseases, metabolic problems, and mortality conditions. However, these are just guidelines and we ought to have our waist circumferences much lower than that.

So how do you get rid of your beer belly? The answer is very obvious. Simply reduce your alcohol consumption if you are a regular drinker or even become a teetotaller if you can. By doing this, not only are you decreasing your calorie consumption, you are also saving yourself from other medical complications because alcohol is toxic. Amongst many other ill health effects, alcohol can and do damage your liver as well as your brain cells.

You can further reduce your calorie intake by just drinking good old plain water instead of drinking sugar laden beverages like tea, coffee and sodas. As an extra fat burner, increase your daily activities or start a regular exercise program to burn even more fat.

Yes, drinking beer can give you an unsightly and dangerous beer belly!
